That’s difficult. I’ve already dissapointed a couple of my westerner friends. How can you hide something that they will eventually do -ride the bus, ride the train, buy from slow moving service staff, buy from inefficient grocery stores, be run over by cars while crossing the pedestrian lanes. They will arrive in an airport full of incompetent officials. One time, an airport official made us wait inside a hot room before.he opened the immigration gates just because he was having coffee. How can you hide that? The best thing to do is convince them that the Philippines is an advanced society BUT DON’T BRING THEM HERE! Lolz. Lolz. Make some excuse for them not to see it themselves. Just show them sugarcoated videos. But on the positive side: Make sure you have a car. Do not let him cross the streets. Make sure you druve him straight into the mall parking or bar/pub/restaurant safe grounds. This will be hard because they usually want to walk and feel the country. But don’t let them do that.Make sure you have a list of parties that you are confident service staff will not fuck you up. I was dating this American girl and oh my God, service staff has Attention Defficiency Order (ADD) and I had to keep getting up for more beers. We would have long intervals between beers and my American date kept asking “what happened to our orders?” “Is it always like this in the Philippines?” She evntually did the ordering and found me inept to handle a restaurant or a date. Save yourself the disaster and plan ahead. List down the places. Also, nothing more embarassing than to not be able to enter a place.then end up in a shitty bar just because you drove all the way to a certain bar just to arrive that it is “closed for staff holiday” or they ran out of beers. Onli in da pilipins.Car. Car. Car. This country hauls humans in buses and trains like cattle. You cannot just walk from one place to another. They are inaccessible by walking and you will be in danger of dying in the streets every 2mins. CAR CAR CAR bro. You can’t live like a human being in this country without a car.OR, honesty is the best policy. Just tell them the truth. That you will be in danger of dying every two minutes but they will have fun. Thailand, Vietnam are just as chaotic as Philippines. But tourists still flock Thailand anyways, right? Manage their expectation. Tell them it’s a shithole of sin and adventure. They will appreciate it. If you market it like Paris, they will definitely be disappointed and will not talk to you ever again. Lolz. True story.

When I was in Portland I saw people drop their pants to poop on the street. There were tent cities and every bridge and underpass downtown was filled with homeless. The homeless even in crowded downtown areas didn’t even bother to hide their crack or meth pipes. Los Angeles has recently been hit by bubonic plague and typhus due to the filthiness of the streets causing a rat infestation. Skid row in LA also filled with homeless. San Francisco has an app called SnapCrap so you can report areas where there is poop on the street because it’s so prevalent. My hometown in Tennessee was rife with poverty, violence, drug abuse and crime. When I lived in Myrtle Beach, despite being “family friendly” on the veneer there was quite an ugly, seedy underbelly as well. There are a couple places where there are red light districts in the Philippines, but there is prostitution in most every country whether it’s on the surface or not. There are also a few spots like Tondo or Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao that are not safe to visit. Apart from that however, the Philippines is a country with amazing natural beauty, vibrant music, art and culture scene, galleries and museums and the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. I don’t at all consider the Philippines “trashy” and must admit I almost take a bit of umbrage at the suggestion, though I understand you’re not necessarily calling it that yourself. I’ve been to some “trashy” areas in my life. Lived in some “trashy” places and, as I said, there are definitely some seedy or dangerous places in the Philippines but that is true for anywhere. As for what to say to someone, you could point out the existence of slums and prostitution everywhere. You could point to the natural beauty of the country, the many attractions, the amazing food and (what really makes it for me) the amazing people. And if that doesn’t do it for them, just let them bask in their ignorant opinions.
