Do you rent or own? How did you ship your assets to Philippines? Did you contact retirement dept. Before moving there? Thanks in advance

I chose to rent my house in the Philippines. Technically, foreigners can’t own property here, so unless you are buying a condo, the house has to be in the name of a Filipino. Lots of guys do this (wife or girlfriend) but it seems pretty risky to me should the relationship go south. I also don’t desire to invest in property in case something goes wrong here and I need to flee. Before I moved here I sold just about everything I own. I shipped two boxes of small items and carried an extra suitcase on my flight. I didn’t notify any government agency of my pending departure. I use my daughter’s house as my official US address and any mail or notifications are sent there.

Because renting is so cheap & direct (no credit checks etc.), most expats don't bother with buying a house, given you can never own land in the PH. The only ways around land ownership is to register the land in your wife's name (risky) or get a long-term land lease (more sensible).
