Which would be a better place for a single, 55-year-old, white, and American man to retire to: the Philippines, Thailand, or Costa Rica?

I gather you want a warm climate and a place that isn’t expensive. Costa Rica is supposed to have an excellent healthcare system and has a reputation of being a really nice place to live. Thailand, well the food is good if you like it spicy, but the government sucks. Philippines is okay and you can get a girlfriend, boyfriend, or both in one if that is something you’re into. In all cases, however, the romantic attachment isn’t about romance—it’s about money. But beware, Filipinos will lie until their last breath, cheat you at any opportunity and steal everything you own of any value. That’s based on my personal experience.

I'm no where near retirement but I do travel a lot. This question will have a different answer for everyone but the question you need to ask yourself are the same: Do you like the local food?Where else do you want to travel to? How much does it cost to get there?If you like the local food it will be much cheaper to live in the country and the food will be better. Often you need to/want to go to your home country to see relatives (children, grandchildren, siblings). The cost of flights adds up. It sounds like you are single. You will be able to find a relationship in ay of those countries but it will be different to a western relationship. They are well documented. Some people are happy. A lot of people get burned. Be careful.
