It is safe, why not? I am spending my life in the countryside, in a barrio a dozen kilometers away from town, which town is a hundred kilometers from the capital city of the province. We Pinoys are mild people, unless there are the rebels out to kidnap you and use you as a political tool. If you are an expat, more of a Kano, why, you really are safe, do not worry about the rhethorics of Digong, Pinoys are friendly to expats. But being involved in local or barangay politics is not recommended. If you are a retired teacher, much better. And if you are connected by blood or marriage to a Pinoy or Pinay, to the nth degree of consanguinity or affinity, the barangay is your de facto protector. The Pinas is relatively safe. There is one tip: when a foreigner go to a certain barrio or town, it is for his safety to tag along a local to that place, this local with a connection by kinship (blood or marriage) to the place visited. That makes you safe.

Lets define countryside. Are you talking about way out in the boonies of the provinces where you have no family looking out for you and you probably don’t sling the local lingo? In this instance I would say, no. Living like this with your girlfriend and her family then yes, that would be pretty safe, but make sure you thoroughly check her and the family out first. If she is young and doesn’t have a big social media network for you to look up friends and family and their friends and family proceed with caution, as not having Facebook is pretty rare here. If you are talking about out in a small town in the provinces or even on the outskirts of a decently sized provincial town this should pose little risk. What is important is you not be isolated with no protection.
