US is not really upset with the Philippine’s (PH) anti-drug crime war. They are upset because the Philippines has elected a leader that is not mesmerized by the US. It all started during the 2016 PH presidential election when Duterte and the outgoing US Ambassador to the PH Philip Goldberg exchanged heated words. Goldberg criticized then presidential candidate Duterte on the his remarks regarding the 1989 rape of Australian lay missionary Jaqueline Hamill. This is of course, even in my opinion, unbecoming for a foreign ambassador since Goldberg’s action is meddling in the internal affairs of the Philippines. When Duterte assumed the presidency he took an about face in the traditional pro-US Philippine foreign policy. The PH president is overtly leaning towards China in an effort to re-balance its foreign relations which is detrimental to US position. Thus, in an effort keep the Philippines within her strong influence, US is applying public diplomacy in raising many issues portraying the new administration is not good. One of which is raising human rights violations caused by the war on drugs Duterte has declared discounting the fact that the drug infestation is also hurting the country. Of course, we too must encourage the investigation of these killings that are connected to the war on drugs to determine which are really extrajudicial killings from the typical cases of murder, homicide etc. and bring to justice these deaths. The president must be held accountable to his campaign promise to eliminate/ lessen crime in 6 months (which is extended to another 6 mos). To close, the Philippines being a vital item in US’s efforts to keep China at bay, and to maintain a strong presence in Asia, the Philippines must be compliant to US and must be pro-US. With the election of Duterte, it created uncertainty in US policy towards Asia. As a result, the US is taking situation control measures such as attempting to make the PH president look bad most especially on human rights violations. This is also a co-result of the PH president not taking a hard position on ensuring that all these alleged human rights violation connected to the war on drugs are investigated and stopped.

It's the extra-judicial killing and the president encouraging these killings that disgust us.
