Which country is better for westerners to live after retirement, Thailand or the Philippines?

Interesting and difficult question…and I don't think there's a clear winner. It's whichever place works best for you. Here's a few salient points to ponder weather – similar for both though Philippines seems to get more tropical storm and typhoon events Cost of living – I think about similar and there is a really wide variance in both places. Meaning, there are people leading simple lives for 1000 or so USD per month and there's people spending 8 or 10,000. It's possible in both locations though I have heard that life in the Philippines on lower income levels, is easier than Thailand. Language – English is spoken throughout the Philippines while even in Bangkok you can have language issues. Once you're out of Bangkok and away from tourist zones, knowing some Thai starts becoming important. Immigration issues – the retirement policies of each country is different. It seems the Thai laws are a bit more difficult but I think in both places it is about demonstrating financial ability to live in the country without working at all and not becoming a burden on society Personally, if I were trying to decide, I would consider spending a month in each country, traveling around, enjoying the sights and getting a sense of which place in that country appeals the most. If 1 country or the other is not a clear winner, then spend at least 1 month but ideally maybe 2 or 3 in your favorite spot in each country. Stay in an apartment and begin living like a local (sort of). Life as an expat retiree is different than being on an extended holiday. There are real life issues you have to face and it's best to get a sense of what they are in each place before deciding. It's a great adventure. Enjoy your research and retirement!

I live in Mindanao/Philippines but Thailand is for me the favorite. More save in Thailand, more developed, more clean. I walk in the morning on the sea and a tractor with an equipment clean the beach. Then there is a park with many body building equipments, every body can use free. Life in Philippines: Descendants of Spanish conquerer dominate on some places in the Philippines your live and you are not save if they touch you. Who know, there are some Regional Hall of Justice Syndicates, dominated of a Judge. Case delay is a dirty business and if they touch you, you have to pay not 1 or 2 hearings, you have to pay 30, 40 or 50 hearings. With a lie of a Police you come in the Police Arrest and your life is now complicated. I know Filipinos and Foreigners – victim of this system with privileges of Spanish conquerer still active 1800 to 2019 which promote corruption and crime. Is that a save Justice System, if the Judge blackmail the Private Lawyer, to follow his instruction, not to work effective and serious for the client? If they don’t follow, the Private Lawyer get a warning, to lose his accreditation on the home Hall of Justice and he/she have to look for an other court, perhaps 100 km from his home etc. etc. I hear, that all asian countries have a similar problem with corruption and crime but the No. 1 is the Philippines 2000 to 2015. We can hope, that President Rodrigo Duterte change the system structure. If no body touch you on the road, to catch your money, it’s ok but I know, that some have to pay on a checkpoint under the table high price, to get back the foreign drivers license.
