People do. My dad immigrated to the Philippines, for instance. There are 899,311 US citizens who have immigrated to Mexico. American immigration to Mexico – Wikipedia Why? Mostly the low cost of living. Even with lower wages, many people from the US find they can live better in Mexico doing white collar work than they can in the US. Retirees can even survive on just social security in Mexico because the cost of living is so low. Similarly, lots of Australians and New Zealanders move to Indonesia and Thailand for the low cost of living.

Because if they are going TO somewhere, the verb is ‘emigrate’. Anyway, last time I went from the UK to Ethiopia (for a job interview), I was sitting next to someone who had been working making cars in England but was emigrating to Ethiopia because he thought the job prospects there would be better. And when I was in Malaysia I spent some time with a gentleman who was there as an illegal immigrant, again because the economy was stronger than in his home country.
