From what I see in my research, some expats in the Philippines carry bolos or knives around even though it is illegal for a foreigner to carry a weapon. Do they get punished if caught?

American answer: Bollywood actress Sunny Leone starred in a Filipino rape-revenge film called I EAT YOUR SKIN (Similar to I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE) based on a case of some 5/6 money borrowers who raped a female Indian money lender in the Philippines. In recent years, Indian 5/6 money lenders have been purchasing guns at SM Mall & most of them are packing heat. Anyone can buy a gun at the SM gun store. Many Western expat retirees are ex-military & many of them have rifles or shotguns in their houses There is nothing more scary than being robbed by shabu addicts. Shabu addicts tend to target Westerners because our chances of ID’ing them or ever knowing who they are is so slim & we are comparatively wealthy The other aspect is that many Westerners are drunk so the shabu addicts-and granted in Duterte’s era there are less of these than when I lived in Cebu-are more prone to commit a home invasion on sluggish older American drunks Phil-Chinese businessmen have guns-most of them-so the attitude of Americans is “why shouldn’t I have a gun too?” The PNP will either take the weapon off the American or simply fine him-a bribe another words-a few thousand pesos. There was a case of an older American pedo named John John lived with 14 year old girls. He had an arsenal in his house of guns. He was a paranoid alcoholic. He was raided by the PNP. The PNP like busting older Americans because they will thousands to get out of jail. John paid $23,000 & was back on the street the same day. So the attitude of the American is “if some shabu addict tried to rob me & I shot him…I’ll just pay the police $10,000”. Also, let us be honest. Do wealthy Filipinos really care if some long-time poor shabu-addicted squatter-junkie on a desperation ride tries to rob some American & the American shoots or stabs him?

Bolos are tools. When my dad was a kid, the school required all boys First Grade and older to bring bolos to school, and they made them clear the grounds of weeds before and after school. However, knives can’t be brought into many buildings like malls. My dad has a friend, an older Filipino, who carries a bolo with him EDC, and he always checks in in with security in the places he goes. I think the security in the places he frequents know him, and they might not do this for everyone. I carry a knife when in the Philippines, but not when I’m going to places that have security screening. I’m not technically a foreigner, however. The largest I’ve carried was a Cold Steel Recon Tanto on my belt, but that was out in the country. I know people who own and carry firearms, but it takes several permits, they are illegal even for bodyguards to carry during election season (which is several months,) and there are many places you can’t carry them. They are all Philippine citizens or dual citizens. It would be illegal for them to carry or even own the firearms without their permits, and most people can’t afford the permits or guns.
