Many smart educated Americans seem to have problems in the PR. Relationship or money or interpersonal issues with Pinoys. Why? Why do so many expats “lose the plot” in the PR who were well-to-do professionals in the USA?

    This isn’t a Philippines issue. I’ve seen it happen all over. What happens is that men start thinking with their tool, instead of their brains. In developing countries, there are plenty of beautiful, poor women who see a ticket out of their circumstances in a rich, well educated expat. The sheer numbers of women available are entirely different to what they experience in their home country. They’ve gone from ordinary to extraordinary simply by getting on plane. Sex is a primal drive. It is so innate that humans often feel compelled to to satisfy the drive, no matter the fallout. Being blinded by hormones is a huge reason for humans making poor life choices.

    Short answer: the cultures of the Philippines and the USA are very different, but on the surface they look similar. So Americans are likely to be in a social situation that is strange, but without knowing that it is strange. Hence they are likely to make a wrong move. To see this, simply consider the social significance attached to Coca-Cola or hamburgers in the Philippines and in the USA. That is a very obvious example, but is only the beginning…
