In my opinion the Philippines can and is a great place for just about anyone to retire that is from a westernized county. I believe statistics will show that the majority of expats living in the Philippines are Brits, Americans, and Australians as many are married to Filipino woman there. By comparison to western nations most Filipinos earn very little money`as in the Philippines if you earn $20,000.00 per year you will be in the top 1% of earners in the entire country. Perhaps statistics have changed in recent years but last I checked which was just a few years ago such was the case. I was last in the Philippines in the months of May thru the beginning of July 2019. You cannot legally own land in the Philippines unless you are married to a Filipino citizen but you can through starting a real estate investment company. A building lot of 120 square meters in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA might cost as much as $500,000.00 USD, the same building lot in Vietnam might cost $86,000.00 USD but in the Philippines, recently I found a lot of such size for sale for only $2,000.00 USD or its equivalent in Philippine Pesos. While it is not legal for a foreigner to buy and own land in the Philippines, “where there is a will , there is a way”, at least for now. I last lived full time in the Philippines during 2011 thru 2012 on a total budget of $2,500.00 USD, for the entire year. Where in our own home country our money may barely be enough for us to survive or even not enough in the Philippines it may just represent instant wealth, real wealth. I once had a good friend who was a Filipino citizen living and working in the Philippines, an experienced medical doctor and earned a whole $1,000.00 USD equivalent per month, that is when she got paid which was often delayed in receiving it. By comparison I have always earned between $1,000.00 USD, and $5,000.00 USD per month, sometimes per week. so just think about what my choices might be for a lifestyle I could comfortably live in the Philippines or any Brit. The Philippines for the most part is an English speaking country, and step by step it offers more and more amenities for comfortably living. I have always had both TV cable and internet there plus hot water and electricity which often still experiences many brown outs but for the most part not. But for the generally poorer construction and poorer roads the Philippines to me could be a tropical US much like Hawaii but not so modern, yet still quite acceptable to me who was raised mostly in the US countryside.

Q: Is the Philippines a good place for a Brit to retire to? It is for some, but not for everyone. Your finances will determine how well you can live there, in comparison to your UK life. You can live cheaply, if you live like a Filipino, but a lot of western options can be just as expensive, or more so, than in the West. Most people speak enough English to get by, so language isn’t a problem. Life in Makati, Greenbelt, etc, is vastly different to life outside the cities.
