What trees and plants would you recommend for planting on a plot of land in San Marcelino, Philippines? We would like to establish a garden before we actually move out there. I thought palm trees for shade would be a good start.

Palm trees for shade? Have you ever seen how a palm tree grows? As it matures, the only thing you see is a trunk with a small amount of foliage at the top. Unless you are growing a whole field of palm trees planted very close, you will not benefit from the shade of a few palm trees. Grow palm trees for coconuts, that’’s different. Plant away. Since you want to start a garden later, why not start with some fruit trees? You can plant Mangosteen, Papaya, Banana, Mango, Avocado, Jack Fruit and varieties of citrus. Your next trip to Phlipland, visit a botanical garden and see what indigenous trees and plants grow there. Plant what you like.
