I am an American expat in the Philippines (going back in May). I’ll tell you right now that in the ultra competitive job market of the Philippines being a native English speaker won’t get you more than a bagel here. I also speak Spanish fluently which is a huge plus for me in the call center world. Bilingual reps I’ve been told earn upwards of P70, 000. I personally don’t plan to work there but to study. I think you should try to get a job here though. A Spanish phrase that applies very aptly to the employment situation here is ‘exigen mucho pagan poco’ look it up. Just to give you an idea of what the employment situation here is like. My partner is a high school teacher. He graduated magna cum laude. He works 5 days a week. He often has to take work home with him. He also has to perform many duties outside of his job description. If he is sick and doesn’t come to work he doesn’t get paid. If its a weather issue he does get paid (he’s one of the lucky ones). All this for a salary of about US $135 a month. He does private tutoring on the side to earn some extra cash. You see doctors here leaving their practices to work at call centers. There’s some meme floating around the internet about a gas station attendant position requiring a bachelor’s degree and while that’s slightly an exaggeration its not by much. In short there’s a reason why this scene is so common here.
