If you're a traveller, the first thing you'll be worried about is not the possibility of you being a victim of homicide! More likely, you'll be a victim of SCAM, THEFT and HARASSMENT. PUBLIC SAFETY in general, that's what you need to look after to. Again, being aware of your surrounding makes any travel safe! I found Global Peace Index too broad, for it includes terrorism. The risk of bombing are more likely to happen in major cities in Europe than let say Jakarta, Bangkok or Manila. You can read the metrics here. Global Peace Index – Wikipedia Road safety is something that you would like to consider as well. I will answer your question based on my experience living and traveling around Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. If you’d like to read about SEAn countries and my adventures and experiences, check out VietnamChronicles. First of all, I’ve never experienced a real danger outside the traffic and natural disaster. Use your common sense wherever you go. People are generally friendly and willing to help without asking anything in return. Be careful when traveling around busy and touristic places since there are loads of scams and petty crimes going on. Put your backpack in front of you and be aware of your surroundings all the time. Traffic is very crazy in Vietnam, Thailand and sometimes in Cambodia. I would say that Vietnam is a wild west when it comes to traffic in SEA. As an outsider, traffic can look chaotic, but once you’re in that chaos, you’ll figure out there is a certain flow and everything is working out. Be extra careful of big cars and buses. The golden rule with traffic in SEA is – the bigger vehicle has a lead, so drive accordingly. I’ve experienced a crash in Vietnam and even in that bad moment, the people were genuinely nice and willing to help, even it was completely my fault. When it comes to natural disasters and bad weather, you should always plan your trip accordingly. I’ve experienced a huge fire that almost burned my Lao family’s during a dry season. It was a real horror. A few houses next to our house was completely burned down in minutes. SEA is generally safe to travel. Just use your common sense, educate yourself about the destination before you go, be friendly and you’ll have a great time!
