Main reason: Cost of living If you’ve got a million in your account, I believe that’s not nearly enough to retire at age 40 in the states for example. In Mexico that’s comfortable living for the rest of your life, even at 30 or 35. Not only that, but not all Mexico is developing, not all Thailand is developing and so on. Most of the cities, despite having such a low cost of living, absolutely qualify for the developed status. Here in Mexico some favorite cities for retirees are: Santiago de Queretaro, Queretaro. Crime is low, Cost of living is low, Human Development Index is of 0.880 (Higher than the microstate of Andorra, or Portugal), GDP per Capita nominal of $20,000 (higher than Greece or Poland). Merida, Yucatan. Crime is at the level of Europe (state murder rate at around 1.3), HDI of 0.832 and fastly growing, GDP per capita nominal of over 13,000. It is commonly regarded as the cheapest big city in Mexico, and although a bit less developed than others, it still qualifies as a developed city, with a Very High human development and a High Income economy. I used examples from Mexico because that’s my country, expats come here because our safest regions are actually safer than the best in the US, the cost of living is dirt cheap, and the quality of life is very high. And, of course, for all the beauties our country (and all the countries you mentioned) has. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A favorite among americans looking for little coast town living. Very High quality of life. Panama City, Panama. Definitely a top-notch global city. Bangkok, Thailand. Another clearly developed city. Manila, Philippines. Again, if this city was a micro-state, no one would be doubting it as a target for migrants all across the world. Indonesia, truly a unique country. Relatively safe, warm culture, great climate, cheap living.
