I’m not sure if I’d include the phrase “best place to live…” and “Manila” in the same sentence! Although it’s true that that is where the job opportunities have traditionally been (hence the crowding and congestion). Although Cebu City is catching up to Manila as far as congestion is concerned it still has a long way to go. Accommodation is quite a bit cheaper and it’s one of the fastest growing BPO sectors in the world (the new Cebu Business Park is awesome!). It also has much better access to beaches and the beautiful Visayan islands. Davao is another great alternative to Manila. The second most populous region in the Philippines outside the National Capital Region and the economic hub of Mindanao. Davao City itself is very safe as far as criminal activity is concerned (President Rodrigo Duterte was Mayor for 22 years and, let’s just say, made Davao a very bad place to be if you’re a criminal) – Davao is currently ranked as the 2nd safest city in SE Asia Davao 2nd top safest city in SEA . Nonetheless, in the regions immediately outside Davao City, there is a real risk of terrorism and kidnapping due to the proximity of the Muslim areas of Central, Western and Southern Mindanao where most of the Islamic population of the Philippines (around 5.6%) are concentrated. As a somewhat macabre aside, a bit over a year ago I was doing a risk analysis for an Australian university which was considering undertaking a long-term project in Southern Mindanao. I was having a Sunday breakfast meeting with the President of one of the in-country participating organisations who was bending over backwards to convince me that Southern and Western Mindanao were completely safe and there was absolutely no risk whatsoever from our Islamic friends. At that point the President’s assistant ran into the room to tell us that the Cathedral of Our Lady in Jolo had been bombed, killing a large number of people including one of the representatives of the President’s organisation. If i were to choose another place to live and work besides Metro Manila, that will be at CLARK Global City in Angeles City, Pampanga. It has easy access to an international airport, a brand new modern hospital, nice hotels, large commercial establishments, leisure, sports facilities and residential villages around. It is the next business hub of the Philippines. Google it up!
