When you say ‘city’ in that context, it sounds to me like you are thinking of the metropolitan areas akin to cities in other countries – perhaps Toronto. I note from your profile that you are in Canada, but say you’ve lived in the Philippines (2019) and therefore you already know a lot about how the country is structured and what constitutes a city here. Not much has changed in between 2019 and 2021… so I am guessing much of what you already know will be the same as it was when you were last here. Metro Manila is made up of a collection of small cities, joined together in a large mass, like a conurbation. They each have their own personalities, although you have to spend a bit of time finding that out. There is no natural ‘center’ of Metro Manila, although some would describe Intramuros as the original center of the city – certainly it is the location of the Spanish center from times gone by. Personally, I enjoy being in Metro Manila most of the time. It is noisy, busy, crammed with people and overrun with traffic, but has much to see and do, all the same. I live in amongst it all, and so far have not been disappointed. Other ‘cities’ in the Philippines – such as Cebu, Davao or any others are much, much smaller. Locations such as Iloilo, Roxas, Dumaguette, Baguio and others are sometimes referred to as cities but are much smaller urban areas. In other countries places of this size these might be called ‘towns’, but I guess mileage varies. Visit them – they are good to experience. Outside of the metropolitan areas are the provinces, and these are where much of the natural beauty lies. Places like Coron, Palawan, or Boracay are well worth a visit, but do not limit yourself! Visit the mountains, visit the beaches – you’ll spend a lifetime trying to see it all. It’s a wonderful country.

Cebu City – they have a faint Hispano-Chinese legacy left despite many years. And their food is good.Vigan City – where strong Spanish influence and architecture was preserved.Baguio City – Summer Capital, cool even the weather is hot in lowlands.Tagaytay – Easy access from Manila.Antipolo City – to learn why it is called a pilgrim's destination.Davao City – having unique tourist spots and food.General Santos City – Another gastro destination, for seafood.Zamboanga – strong Latino influence is still existent.Though not cities: Sagada and Bontoc – learn how the indigenous highlanders live and deal with modernisation.Coron, El Nido and Culion – nice beaches.Boracay – a part of Malay municipality, known for the beach. And before you go, with this pandemic going on, health protocols must be enforced.
