It depends. Traffic in Manila is considered the worst IN THE WORLD, so you need to keep this in mind when choosing a place to live. You could opt for a palatial home in a posh gated community, but if you work on the other side of the city, you stand to lose 2–4 hours a day (maybe even more) stuck in traffic. As it stands, Manila has no shortage of residential developments, and it’s easy enough to find a nice place—whether it’s a house in a secure community or a high end building with loads of amenities—in a location close to where you work. The city is also peppered with malls that have most of what you’ll need. If you absolutely cannot live without parks and green open spaces, go for the walled villages. I live in an apartment in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig (I work in Makati, which is the next business district over, so my commute isn’t so hellish). BGC is a booming area, lots of food options (some of the best in the city), and relatively more green areas than the other business districts of Makati and Pasig. Some of the best schools are located here, as is one of the best hospitals in the country. It’s also the most dog-friendly urban area outside of a gated community. Lots of shopping, hotels, clubs, bars, weekend organic markets, and food fairs. A lot of expats live here and many of the major corporations and multinationals are headquartered here as well, so it’s also one of the safest areas in the city. On nice days, you can actually walk around the area, because unlike many places in Manila, they actually have sidewalks here, most of which are lined with trees. The city is laid out in such a way that buildings provide shade and also create wind tunnels. However, because of all that I’ve mentioned, living in BGC will come at a premium. Good luck!

It depends. What’s your lifestyle like? Do you like people, parties and all kinds of stimulation or do you prefer the serene environment? Do you plan to have a pet? Do you need a nearby hospital? How many hours can you waste stuck on traffic? Taguig and Makati – Business centers. Restaurants, malls, 24/7 stores, fast food chains and coffee shops are everywhere. Mostly alive Mondays to Saturdays. You can walk your dogs. You can’t skate during rush hours (from 6am to 7pm) but biking is accepted. Traffic. People are everywhere. Take care of your personal belongings. Mandaluyong – gateway to EDSA, Shaw, and Makati. Cars are almost always present but this is mostly a residential city. Rent is still expensive but cheaper compared to Makati. You can skate. You can walk your dog but sometimes the cleaners are rude and accuse you of leaving dog poop in the streets. Stray dogs everywhere. Highly accessible but floods during rainy season. Pasig – Haven’t seen any skaters here. No parks / recreational area. Cheap apartments and houses. Cubao – Definitely no skating. Don’t see anyone walking their dog either. The EDSA side is dangerous. The rent is quite expensive, I have a new condo I’m renting out just near the train station / bus stops / malls. Not much space for walking or jogging. Center of Metro Manila so it’s very accessible. And if you like traveling, this is where you can find Luzon’s provincial buses. Since I mentioned Cubao, I’m going to include Alabang (South) – very few people. Big space to walk / jog / run / whatever you can think of. Commuting is not easy, get a car or a skateboard, which I did. Food can be expensive because most of the residents here belong to the upper class society. Malls, food chains, coffee shops, 24/7 convenience stores are spread out. Little to no traffic. It’s the quiet, laid back sibling of Makati & BGC. Condominiums are expensive. But residential areas in nearby cities like Muntinlupa and Las Pinas are cheaper than Makati and Mandaluyong. I highly recommend this place over Manila.
