I currently live in the Philippines and have an opportunity in Hong Kong for a software Engineering role. Is it safe from an expat to move in Hong Kong right now despite the current situation there?

    Yes. The people of Hong Kong are not indescriminate, their protests are geared to affect the country economically to hurt the government, they do not target foreign visitors. If any protest occurs, you would be well advised to be elsewhere to avoid the risk of being accidentally caught up in events, but you would not be in specific danger yourself. In any case, the legislation that caused the recent protests is reported to have been withdrawn so things should calm down.

    I would say HK is pretty safe place to live and work. But it is really not a good time to move all the way to HK during the protest. Wait till it dies down.
