The Philippines is the only country in the world that denies divorce, but moves are underway to legalize it. What is your stand on this?

Well the only other place in the world that divorce doesn’t exist is the Vatican. Do you suppose the resistance has anything to do with the Catholic Church? They DO have annulment, but that’s different… and it’s hard to get. Neither infidelity or physical abuse are seen as justifiable causes. Of course the lack of divorce law does NOT IMPLY that all couples are happy. It also does NOT IMPLY that all couples stay together. It also does NOT IMPLY that couples don’t enter into alternate relationships. It ONLY means that they have to “live in sin” if they do. Of course, without divorce… things like dividing property and child support are somewhat problematic from a legal perspective. Divorce law WOULD allow greater legal accountability. I was married to a Filipina for 15 years. When we were engaged, she told me that divorce didn’t exist in the Philippines. I thought that might mean her commitment to our marriage would be for life. She filed for divorce 3 times before we got one that was final.. and I couldn’t tell you how many times I talked her into staying together without divorce being filed.. By the time the last one came around, I told her that I was planning to file. She felt the need to beat me to it, and filed first. She did want to break up when we were engaged… that’s when I should have listened to her. Then I could have still had most of my best memories and almost none of my bad ones. I really wish it could have worked… but staying legally married for 15 years doesn’t mean our relationship was a particularly good one. I do sincerely wish it would have worked. I never blamed her for everything… but she never accepted any responsibility for anything. Being legally stuck in a marriage for life is not a good thing… and at least some of the time, divorce is best for both partners. Everyone living “happily ever after” only happens in fairy tales…. I think the Philippines should come to this realization “legally”… NOT ONLY in their “true life experiences”. Thanks for A2A

My stand is divorce is good for marriage. It makes it stronger. Imagine I cannot fire you from a job no matter how badly you perform. Will you be working hard? Probably not., But if I can fire you at any time, you will work hard to keep your job. If I know you can’t divorce me, then I can cheat, and get fat and do all kinds of bad things. And there is nothing you can do. But if you can divorce me, then I will treat you much better in marriage, see?
