I’m Filipino. Moved to the US when I was 17. I work in NYC now as a Marketing Manager for a startup. I’ve never felt discriminated or looked down upon ever. Being an immigrant woman, minority, Christian, oh and I used to be poor, I have many things that are supposed to be working against me — but I don’t see myself a victim of anything. So what if some people do look down on you? Never bring a victim or martyr mentality here. That will bring you nowhere. Just keep going. Perception of Filipinas vary wherever you are in the world. The way the Japanese see Filipinas differ in the way Americans do. There are barely any Japayukis in the US after all (put your pitchforks away, I have an aunt and three cousins who used to be japayukis). In the US, Filipinas are commonly nurses. Not bad. There are gold diggers and mail order braids from many countries. Nobody bats an eyelid about that anymore. You’ll be working here as a programmer, a highly respected line of work. Depending on which part of the country you move to (America is huge), you may get more discrimination than others. The coasts (East and West) are your best bets when it comes to diversity. Why are you disheartened about this though? Being perceived as a gold digger or mail order braid is the least of your problems. What you’ll be battling here is culture shock and homesickness. Just dropping some tough love, but you’ll do great here. Welcome to America!

Yes, some Americans think this way, just like some Americans think all Mexicans are sneaking across the border to take their jobs. Should this concern you? Not really. When you visited as a tourist, were there any instances where you faced that kind of discrimination? Online forums are not always a great insight to how things will be. The echo chamber of like minded folks, coupled with the anonymity of the internet has a tendency to bring out the worst in certain people. Notwithstanding a certain presumptive presidential nominee, most Americans are going to be pretty open to people from different countries and cultures. The fact that you're in the US to work as a programmer is proof that you're not a "gold digger", if that really matters. Bottom line, who cares what other people think? There's a vibrant Filipino expat community in the US, and most people I know have always come away from their experiences with a positive view of the Philippines and Filipinos.
