When I first came to Philippines I bought a return ticket from Malaysia where I was working at the time, though I am a UK citizen. I had no need for "show money" or even an invitation letter, I got a one month visa on arrival. Check the Philippines visa site to see if it's the same for your nationality. Incidentally, for a visa for my wife to visit UK (accompanied by myself), I had to apply with bank statements and my last 3 months salary slips!

Are you a foreigner going to the Philippines from a country that needs a visa? (There are a few countries that still needs a visa – most actually don't.) In general, all you need to show is enough funds for the duration of the trip. Perhaps 100 USD per day should do it.
