Can you leave your upper-middle class job to live like a king in a developing country?

Sure. You could move to a nice resort in somewhere like Philippines or Vietnam and get a big and modern home in a secluded place for much less than you'd pay in a developed country. Then, hire 5-6 workers to do everything for you so that you never have to lift a finger. You could pay each of them about $300 a month. Might not be quite the level of a king, but certainly possibly to live very well on a yearly budget of say $100,000 a year.

As someone who lived in a developing country I can say is not as simple as it seems, even if your income would be way higher than the average. First of all the living standard doesn't depend only on your income. Let me explain this – the the medical system, education, infrastructure, safety, etc are not solely built from your taxes. They depend on the average community income and they can greatly affect your life. For example your money can't make the ambulance arrive faster in case of emergency in a country with bad infrastructure or can't make the corrupted officials do their duty. Second aspect is related to the feelings you will get in time because almost everyone around you is poor. Is not pleasant to see people struggling every day to pay their bills or their medication or to see 10 years olds begging for money.
