In our barangay in the Philippines I had a female friend. She was a choir mate of my wife and the daughter of pastoral workers — her brother was even a priest! Very pious girl. But she was also quite rebellious in her personal life. At an early age, she had a boyfriend and it caused quite a bit of a scandal. He was a mestizo man, son of a black father from Chicago and a local mother. This boy was handsome. He stood a lean, muscular 6′2″ and had these blasian features that were a perfect mix between Asian and African. He had the tall and narrow nose of a white man, as his black father hailed from America and likely had some white ancestry as well as most African Americans do. His skin was very dark brown, about the same shade as a dark-skinned Filipino man would have. The little romance of our friend and the half-black young man did not last long; tragically, she died fairly young. Responses weren’t always positive, there was a bit of racism especially from elderly relatives who would shamelessly use the word ‘nigger’ and ‘negro’ to refer to the guy. He spoke pretty broken English, no slang, with a heavy Filipino language. His first languages were Tagalog and Ilokano. Racism or no racism, most people admired the guy for his height, good features and athletic abilities — he was quite good at basketball, although he often refused to play and preferred tinkering with his motorcycle instead. He was popular with the opposite sex, that’s for sure! By the age of 21, he had already fathered three children by three different girls. He first made his mother a lola when he was a mere sixteen and she only 38, as she herself had been a young mother. His dad was nowhere to be seen. Romantically, the man did very well. He was charming enough, but it was mostly his looks and the whole “exotic” factor that helped him score often. The majority of men in the Philippines, foreign men that is, who date local women, are older men. There are some younger backpackers, who tend to be white for the most part but can also include black, asian, latin men. And then there’s the military stationed in the Philippines, American soldiers of all ethnicities, many of whom are black. A man in a uniform always does well. Bonus points if you’re fit, young and have good features. Even more bonus points if you’re a tall dude — I’ve seen black men do very well in the Philippines, and those that do best tend to be taller than average. I’ve also met older black men in the Philippines who dated locally, these men were former military men for the most part, some were businessmen and then there’s the occasional sexpat. The prettiest women I saw on the arm of the tallest, best dressed men. There is a stereotype with Filipina women regarding the athletic skills of black men — the two most popular sports in the Philippines are basketball and boxing, and these are two sports that have a lot of black players excelling. So if you’re a tall and good-looking black man, this is a plus… your Filipina fling may already find herself imagining the little Blasian Michael Jordan’s and Mike Tyson’s she may birth! Overall, any foreign men regardless of their ethnicity can do well in the Philippines. All you need is a foreign passport and you’ll always catch something. Now throw in a little money, some height, some looks, and you’re going to slay.

I know few women who were born in Philippines, who are married or living with their spouses/boyfriends, who are black, here around Los Angeles. But, what I have personally observed, while I was dating online, lots of Asian women had hard lines on their profiles, saying they do not date “Black Men”. I do not know the reason for it but I saw this statement too many times on profiles of women of Asian descent (not only Philippines) at an irrationally higher rate than women of any other race.
