The answer is actually pretty simple: The people in Vietnam are generally richer than the people in the Philippines. I’ll stick some hard statistics down below to convince you that this is the reality. There is a reason why the Philippines is infamously portrayed as one of the poorest nations in South East Asia, and why Vietnam has moved away from that image more, despite coming off a relatively recent war. It’s not largely down to ‘’western media’’ bias and sensationalism. If you want visual affirmation that Vietnam ‘looks richer’: Patrick Dooley's answer to Which is the more advanced and more prosperous country, Vietnam or the Philippines? Whether or not Vietnam, as a country, is actually richer than the Philippines is hard to tell at the moment, with how close their economies are right now. However; this isn’t at all important for this question. We do not consider the Philippines or Vietnam richer than Qatar, just because they have the larger economy, just to make sure we are on the same page; instead we look at the people. National poverty statistics: The two countries have different national poverty thresholds, in fact Vietnam goes further and sets different rates depending on the location.

the Philippines has much more urban development and infrastructure than Vietnam, PH looks richer not Vietnam . The middle class and rich of the philippines is much higher than Vietnam. The cities in the Philippines are a lot more modern and sleek than Vietnam’s cities. Some cities in the Philippines are highly urbanised and very modern. The amount of modern cars on the roads throughout the Philippines compared to Vietnam reinforces a story and fact, that on average , car ownership among Filipinos is high while among Vietnamese it is very low. In a city like Manila it’s 80% cars and 20% motorbikes, in Ho Chi Minh city or Hanoi its 90% motorbikes. The middle class and rich in the Philippines are much larger than in Vietnam. Have a look at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City traffic Then compare it with Manila This is why the philippines looks more developed and wealthier to most foreigners all over the world – it does not matter which perspective or statistic, data, you look at or provide. What humans see and visualise is how we interpret and conclude things. I may also add many of the cities in the Philippines are relatively modern, Fancy areas in Vietnam aren’t too common, nice big houses and subdivisions or good housing developments in the Philippines out weigh anything that Vietnam has by absolute light years. A lot of areas and Houses like this exist in Manila Even malls in the Philippines absolutely dominate any of the small malls that Vietnam has – as you can see the Philippines is the world leader. Consumer shopping is a must in the average person’s life The capital Manila is a modern mega city which is advanced compared to Vietnam’s rather lacking small outdated cities This is honestly why the Philippines looks much more richer and developed than Vietnam it is the infrastructure and urban development that counts the most. 😉
