Philippines and Indonesia are similar in most aspects.. On the eyes of Pinoy expat living here in Indonesia, here are some comparisons based on my experience Eating – Rice is life for both countries. Main difference is in the condiments (KFC, McD), Indonesians eat Ayam with Sambal (Also seen in Malaysia and Singapore) or cheese sauce ( Only in RiCheese Factory), Pinoys eat with chicken gravy (which i miss really bad here). Fastfood eating – KFC and McD in Indonesia will not give you utensils to eat with chicken unless you ask, I eat with my hands here but in PH (KFC, McDo, Jollibee), automatic you will be given spoon and fork. *We also use our hands to eat chicken but at home* Transportation – both very dependent on Uber and Grab. Indonesia wins this with Go-Jek which is the all in one app. (I wish this is available in Manila) Traffic – Jakarta Ring Road and Jalan Gatot Subroto are twins with SLEX and EDSA. Traffic everywhere but Jakarta is catching up with LRT Jabodebek and MRT Jakarta. Shopping Malls – This goes to Philippines, F&B options are endless, you can buy and do anything under one roof. Indonesia is quickly catching up though on this. Sadly, even Grand Indonesia, I find SM Megamall or TriNoMa better and cheaper. Cheap Food – Warung for the win, where you can eat unli rice with different veggies and ayam for 12,000 – 20,000 IDR ( Jogja price ). Carinderias on the other hand is more expensive with one cup of rice and ulam (lauk) starts at 25,000 to 30,000 ..(Manila Rate). Street Food – Gorengan = Fishball Internet – All Hail Telkomsel, XL and Smartfren. I admit it PH internet really sucks and tad expensive. Cannot even reach 1/3 of the speed and coverage. People – Indonesians and Filipinos are respectful and hospitable. I never been treated bad here in Indonesia by anyone. Though I look like Javanese ( Common Ancestry), when they realize I am orang asing, they will thank you for trying to speak Bahasa Indonesia. I can go on but overall, Indonesia is like 2nd home to us Filipinos, I cannot even feel the divide here among religious beliefs. It even made me respect Muslims even more and felt bad on the Moros back home. I defend them against prejudice of other people. Terima Kasih.

Philippines and Indonesia are so similar in general. At least if you only compare the general condition about the area near the capitals. I am a 22 years old Indonesian and last year (2012) I stayed in Philippines (only Manila) for nearly two months to do my internship. At first, I inquiry about the cost of living from my friends there, and it is quite similar with Indonesia. So then I depart. When I arrived and walk around Metro Manila (walking and using Jeepney and trains), it feels like somehow I transferred back to downtown Jakarta/Tangerang but suddenly everyone couldn't speak Indonesian, and I doesn't know my ways around. Other than that, the people looks the same. The building looks similar. The roads is quite the same, with the same amount of vehicle and traffics, and the means of transportation is similar, too. When I wonder around Makati, it also feels like the uptown Jakarta, and Quezon is similar with Depok, another city near Jakarta. I don't engage in business or knows about something extraordinary, it's just about the ordinary living aspect The food :In the Philippines, there are a lot more choices (and cheaper choices) to choose about the food in restaurants. There are a lot of restaurants with different specialty or nationality that are available in shopping malls. It is not the case in Indonesia : If we want to eat something not really usual (etc. Pakistani/Egyptian cuisine) we really need to search for them. The shopping malls food court are filled with fast food, western, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Indonesian cuisine. If we are lucky we could find Thailand's. And of course, in Indonesia (or at least the small cities), it's quite hard to find pork, so when I am in Philippines it's like pork paradise for me, with the cheap prices as well. And it's somewhat cheaper. Sure, we could get Pakistani/Egyptian cuisine, too, but not in mall, and especially not cheap. The prices of food in fast food is cheaper. The pizza is cheaper. And in lower range of price, the meat is cheaper. And it's hard to find vegetables. Cooked vegetables. In Indonesia, you would find a lot of vegetables. If we buy chop suey we will get more veggies than meat, but in Philippines we get more meat than veggies. The packed and canned food and beverages is the same. And in the Philippines they eat fruits a lot. And brushing teeth after a meal. And. Philippines have their own Fast food chain that could rival McDonalds, that is JoliBee. And, of yeah, alcohol everywhere. And have I mention pork? Clothes, accessories, shopping :From my perspective, it's more enjoyable to shop and search for clothes and accessories in the Philippines. It's cheaper, more trendy, more variety, and because Philippines is nearer to Japan, Korea, and China than Indonesia, the product form those countries (which both Indonesian and Filipino loves), are cheaper and more accessible in Philippines. And the malls! The malls in Makati! It's magnificent, even though I actually doesn't see what shops they have, but the space, the buildings, how they build it, and the location is what make it simply better than Indonesia's malls. They integrated it with nature. Transportation :It's similar, but Philippines is better. Sure, they still have traffic, but their system is more advanced than Indonesia, even though the execution are the same. They have three lane roads and more accessible trains and subway and MRT. Jeepney in Philippines = Angkot in Indonesia. Tricicle in Philippines = Becak in Indonesia. The horse carriage exist in Indonesia, too. The cost are similar but higher in Philippines. The gas, though… are a lot higher in Philippines. Education :The education system is different with Indonesia, most apparent is the age group. I should say that I like Indonesian system better, but I don't know which one is better. The children in Philippines finish college at the age of 20. They start at 16. I say, some people may have enough maturity to face the world at that age, but not all. What Jerome de Leon said about scholarship in Indonesia maybe true, but sometimes the cash are very slow to arrive at the hands of the students. Culture, Landscape, entertainment, Language, tourism… You got my point : People in Philippines are way nicer. I even have to doubt why people still said that Indonesian people are nice. They are nicer in the Philippines. I even got greetings from securities and shopkeeper which shops/institution I didn't visit. They got culture left by both Spanish and America. The Merienda (Tea Time) thing and the interest of dances, some of the language and buildings are left by the Spanish for sure. And there are still a lot of Spanish people come to Philippines. For America, they most likely follow America in system, and seems to be supported a lot by America. About the landscape, there are a lot of buildings still in the state left by America or Spain. And it's beautiful buildings. I love to see it. And it made the landscape, in my opinion, better than Indonesia. There are a lot of small roads, but not going around with no exit like in Indonesia. I have walk by foot on both, and I say Indonesia's roads are way more confusing. About language, their second language is sure English, and some people could speak Spanish, and they are good at it. I mean, even the people selling goods on the road could talk basic English. That is not the case in Indonesia. You could find some very fluent English Speaker, but not everyone could speak English. About tourism, I love how Philippines seems like they love history and art. Especially performance art. Mimes, theater, dances, etc. And because of that, they love museums. The museums there are way better than Indonesia. And way more expensive as well. I went to Mount Taal and Corregidor Island, and truthfully, Indonesia's natural panorama is better, but there are no place like Corregidor or American Cemetery place in Indonesia. No place like Bonafficio Global City either. Their malls is also great. The religion, while in Philippines the majority is Catholic (well, the biggest Catholic country in Asia, one of Spain's other inheritance), in Indonesia is Muslim. You could see church and Jesus everywhere, the same with how you could see Mosque everywhere in Indonesia. But I think the religion is more peaceful and compromised in Philippines than in Indonesia. Oh yeah, because of the religion… I am very shocked to see Sister holding DSLR camera in Philippines. I never see one holding any gadget in Indonesia! It also give me chill when I see gunshop in Philippines. W heather : What made me very thankful to be Indonesian after I left Philippines is because I experience the Philippines tornado first hand. It's not a good memory – I was locked in my room with my Filipino roommates, that luckily teach me how to deal with it. They have tornadoes that made 3 of my umbrella broken, and could made the roads flooded just 5 minutes ssince they started. That was maybe why Philippines didn't allow people to carry umbrella in their carry-on baggage in airport. Hehe. I think that's all. Sorry that it becomes my story and rants, and that I couldn't give bigger picture, instead I give small, daily things to compare. I hope that answer some of the question!
