If you have no local health insurance, prepare to have more or less 1 million ph peso (USD$20k) in bank deposit. Private hospitals in the Philippines demand a deposit of significant amount of money depending on your health problem. Do not be surprised if this is being practiced now in the country. Hospitals especially private ones had been experiencing patients who cannot pay the bills and resorted to a useless promissory notes that cannot be paid. The downgrading of hospital services has made it difficult for patients to seek a good medical care, resulting to few hospitals that can accommodate complex procedures.

As hospitals in the Philippines are all private businesses the standard is variable. I had 2 children born to my wife in thePhilippines and we were very happy with the care she received. She had emergency treatment in another hospital which to put it bluntly was a disgrace, filthy with terrible care. I have had surgery for kidney stones , treatment was satisfactory and also treated for Bells Palsy in the same hospital that was filthy when my wife was treated about 20 years later – much improved, with excellent nursing care with absolutely stunning young nurses. By European standards the cost was relatively low as private care but of course all developed countries except the US have free at the point of delivery medical care for their citizens.
