You treat her as a lady, as you should any lady. Be respectful of her opinions and her beliefs. Be a gentleman! Open doors for her, hold her hand as you walk with her (if she lets you), hold her chair for her as you seat her in a nice restaurant, assist her by holding her hand as she walks down a stairway, make sure that she knows she’s first in your life! Be curious about her life, her youth, her culture. Allow her to tell you what she wants to tell you…and perhaps most importantly, do. NOT. judge. And if you’ll think about it, these rules are pretty much universal for all women today, not just Filipinas. I will say, however, that they are generally more family-oriented, and so you MUST be respectful of her family and treat them with all the respect that you would want to be treated by your own family. If her mom or dad tells you something, it really is expected that you listen to them as you would your own mom or dad…and once she and they see that you understand that particular dynamic, they’ll love you for it. Perhaps the hardest thing for me to learn was to keep my mouth shut, meaning that we Americans tend to be far more open about our personal lives and particularly about our “dirty laundry”. Do NOT speak of anything that may embarrass her in public. Protect her dignity! That, and a lot of times you may see a Filipino man or woman do nothing when they see someone else do or say something wrong. It doesn’t mean that he or she doesn’t care – it usually means that they are trying to be patient with the other person, hoping that the other person will grow up, and if the other person doesn’t, a lot of times the Filipino man or woman will address the issue in the Oriental way – obliquely, describing the problem and what needs to be done about it without accusing the person who did something wrong. This way, the person who did something wrong can correct his or her behavior while at the same time keeping his or her dignity. It makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. In all honesty, the culture there is very much like the culture I grew up with in the Deep South, in the Mississippi Delta – the respect for the eldery (“po” is their gender-neutral word for “sir” or “ma’am” and is used in every such situation with an elder or a supervisor as we would Down South). And if you yourself are from the South, you’ll be surprised to find boiled peanuts, okra, mustard greens (!), and even chitlins for sale on the street! And if she’s from the Philippines and not raised in America, remember that she almost certainly speaks two (and possibly more) languages fluently, which is a heck of a lot more than most of us Americans can say. Respect her for that! Learn at least some of her language – Tagalog is surprisingly easy. After you learn the rules of Tagalog pronunciation and spelling, you’ll realize how unnecessarily complex (and stupid) English is. It’s really easy – the vowels are all pronounced the same way – the a-e-i-o-u are all pronounced ah, eh, ee, oh, and ooh (respectively) pretty much without exception (and the same goes for a LOT of other languages that use our alphabet, btw). That, and pronounce all syllables. That’s it. That’s how freaking easy it is to spell and pronounce Tagalog words. The grammar’s a bit more challenging, but no more so than most other languages (and it’s certainly easier to learn than English grammar). Good luck!

I’m a Filipina, and the least I find in a guy is 1.) Fuckboy. Yes, that, especially when he’s obsessed with trying to look good and hot, has this thing with social media, UGH I HATE THOSE. Especially that laid-back attitude. I JUST WANT A SIMPLE GUY WITH CHIVALRY. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND SOMEONE LIKE THAT!!
