Depends how well you want to live and how many are in your household. Assuming you are single, not looking to buy property and rent a small studio apartment at a safe/clean neighborhood in METRO MANILA: Studio Apartment Rent (Mckinley Hill): Php18–27k (cheap if unfurnished) Higher-end Loft Apartment Rent (Mckinley Hill) : Php50k – 90k I quote Mckinley Hill because it has businesses in there where foreigners are usually supporting like BPOs. Food (if groceries, but this also depends if you’re shopping for local produce or imported ones, let’s assume local and that you cook): Php 3–5k/month (chicken meat to beef meat with fruits and veggies) Food (if eating out at “fancy” restaurants everyday, every meal): Php 300/meal + Grab app delivery fee of Php59–79, sometimes Php159 if really far = Php 1100–1400/day, Php 42000/month Transportation (if your company does not provide you with shuttle): if living in the business district where your company is, transpo is zero. But if using Grab, it depends on the time and distance from where you are. I used to just walk to the office pre-pandemic, I didn’t want to suffer through traffic in Metro Manila. It used to take me 30-45 minutes to get to a place that was just 5–10 minute drive. I have no idea how much living expenses are outside of Metro Manila now but they are for sure at least 3x cheaper. If buying a house in addition to living here, add these costs: Holly Benedicto · Answered May 30Can people buy a house with $50,000 in the Philippines? Yes, in the suburbs that are 1h away from the megacities or really rural areas. But due to recent changes in taxation, expect to spend more. Average price of middle-class 2BR homes in Metro Manila are Php100–150k/sqm. No. That’s just Php500k. The things that determine Philippine real estate prices are obviously demand and location. And usually demand is higher in cities where business and employment happens, while demand will be a little lower in the surrounding suburbs and even lower in rural areas. You can use (more)

It all depends on where you live and what lifestyle you want to live. I know some military retirees burning through $5,000-$6,000 per month chasing barely legal tail in Makati and saying they can barely make ends meet. I also know a few retirees making barely a $1000 a month living in Davao suburbs in nice houses, supporting a family, and living well. I know a retired American couple in their 70’s who rent a fully furnished floating beach cabin with dock and hire a houseboy to run errands. They snorkel every day, eat at the night market every night and live on around $1600 a month. (he told me their social security was about $2000 and they try to save 10%-20% for emergencies). They rent the cabin from my wife and I at $25 a day, They spend about $3 or $5 a day on high end fresh seafood which is landed by local fishermen a couple hundred yards down the beach and then they spend another few bucks on fresh fruit and vegetables. Their biggest expense is propane for the stove, small refrigerator, and generator. (We don’t allow charcoal fires in or on the structure)
