I came from a smaller province that's an overnight boat-ride or 6hrs land trip + 3hrs fast craft away from Cebu. I have been residing here for 7-8 years now with no house of my own nor family, purely rental and surviving on non-homecooked meals. 4 years of that as a university student. Here are my thoughts:Cebu is very liveable. Better way of life than in smaller cities and packed with opportunities (even compared to Manila since they're overly populated). Relatively lesser cost of living than Manila too. To say that the cost of living here is comparable to the US dumbfounded me. You just have to know the right places and not spend like a one day millionaire, survival without burning holes in your pocket is very possible. It's a norm. The traffic is getting worse but overall it is still one of the best places to live in. If you, hypothetically, ate fast food meals (point of comparison, fast food being midway the lower end and high end everyday food consumption) entirely for every meal 7days a week that would be, roughly (if you eat value meals at jollibee or mcdonalds, "all day breakfast" strips, etc) you'd get an average 50php-150php per meal. Which is not bad. Consists of rice, viand and a glass filled with softdrinks. At minimum That would be 150/3meals/day = 4,500php or $100 per month is an assurance you won't go hungry. Of course there are karenderyas that can help you survive and eat "healthier" with veggies and fresh homecooked (sort of) food. Many at 25php per viand (pork barbeque is just 15-20php/stick) a simple local "cuisine" (if you're quite optimistic to consider it like that). It's not really that bad! We even have chicken that's only 20php per piece. God, I love those chicken. They're everywhere too. I know of a guy from University of the Philippines Cebu who just buys siomai at 8php per piece then adorn it with all the siomai sauce from the siomai heavens and eat 2 cups of rice. Solve! + he's a successful person now. (After graduation, he stopped eating siomai everyday, of course) Bread is still at 5php. See, you don't really have to eat cup noodles everyday and get kidney diseases. Some good meals are cheaper than cup noodles! You will never really go hungry. Transportation is just 8php per way via jeepney. Go live near your university and you won't have to spend 8php, just walk. I've stayed in 5 different places (dorm/pad/boarding house) since my arrival here so far I was able to stay in a 1,500 room that felt like living in a shoebox. So i transferred to a 2,500php one that had a kitchen, common CR and was very liveable. They were lovely but i had to move out because I had to transfer near the hospital where we have our OJTs. There I rented a room for 4,000 which was double the size of my 2,500 room. I could literally make solo dance routines inside. All of which were pretty decent and I did not share my room with anyone (i'm just not used to sharing a room). Not luxurious but I can't say my life and R&R time were compromised. Some apartments here are at 10k which you can also share the cost with other people so you can save. If you decide to be a bed spacer there are plenty at 2,000/month, just have to share the room with 2-3 other people. If you mind this, there are several solo rooms that costs 5k/month and you can have the room to yourself. My tuition fee back in nursing college was 35k to 40k for a semester which ran for 6 months. Many courses are much cheaper and are still considered good depending on how prestigious your university is. I don't know what course you want or which university you're aiming at. Since there's none, i hope i've been helpful.. good luck with your undertakings! 🙂

I am currently on my fourth year in one of the unis in Cebu. I won't be able to give you a definite cost of living budget per month as there are a number of factors that we need to consider primarily your lifestyle, the uni you choose as well as the particular city you will be living in. If you are a guy who really controls his budget well and does not mind to live in a single room boarding house or apartment, who does not commute to and from the school and eats food that cost below 5o Php a meal then I should say 5000 – 8000 a month should be fine but if you prefer bigger space and comfortable apartments in the city and who needs to travel to reach the school and spends no less than 100 Php on a single meal then your cost of living would fall within 10000 – 15000 Php range a month. Hope that helps. Good luck!
