South Cotabato. Reason why? Only a few decades ago this province used to be one of the most underdeveloped in the country. Then came foreign investors who brought with them farming stuff and helped turn this virgin settler province into one of the wealthiest in the whole country. It already was very wealthy thanks to its international exports of agricultural products respectively such as pineapples and other fruits. Still, it was a ‘new’ province, i.e. one with lots of potential to be fulfilled although it by national standards is already very developed. No wonder why agricultural products in the province is very cheap, and cheap also was its cost of living that it’s very livable to live. Gen. Santos, the southernmost largest city in the Philippines. It possesses the big cities of Gen. Santos and Koronadal, the latter being the provincial capital and both so wealthy that it would probably put other big Mindanaoan cities like Butuan, Iligan and to some extent even Zamboanga to shame. Both were settled as settler villages in 1939 and were only founded in 1947 as tiny, isolated, destitute, sleepy settler towns but as time passed became cities thanks to, again, foreign investors as well as the will of their locals to work harder for the economy. Partly due to this, both cities have even more room to develop and both have impressive urban planning standards as evidenced in their respective urban landscapes. South Cotabato’s transportation infrastructure and network was the best in whole Mindanao. That picture above? It was the main provincial highway of the province. That is shot way back 2016. Nowadays the road possesses 6 lanes stretching from the cities of Gen. Santos to Koronadal in a total of 65 kilometers, while its main highways that branched off Koronadal towards the neighboring province of Sultan Kudarat has 4 lanes. Most provincial roads in the province are also cemented, unlike those in the rest of Mindanao where dirt roads are still the norm. Although the province is also rocked by communist and Muslim rebels disturbing the order, those were at most occasional. Also, it is completely immune to annual typhoons that victimize the rest of Mindanao. Living in this province is quite safe. Despite the province already very wealthy thanks to its vibrant economy, it still has far more room to develop more and more for the better. Overall, it probably possesses the brightest future among other Mindanaoan provinces. That is thanks to no small part to the leaders of the province, very competent ones I might say. Special mention(s):Bukidnon – also known for pineapple exports, very wealthy and affluent especially the cities and towns that straddle along the Sayre Highway. But rebels both communist and Muslim always plague the mountains of the province (bukidnon means ‘man of the mountain’ in native Mindanaoan language). Plus, it’s also landlocked, has no functional airport unlike SC, and would require shit-ton of hours just to get to the big economic centers of either Davao or Cagayan de Oro.Davao del Norte – very wealthy, known for banana exports and possesses the largest cavendish plantation in the world, its main provincial highway also possesses 6 lanes up to its provincial capital city of Tagum up to Mindanao’s biggest city Davao for 54 kms. But many of its highways are still dirt roads and homicides are almost the norm there.Compostela Valley – although it doesn’t have cities, it is very wealthy thanks to it being blessed with massive gold ores and big banana and rubber plantations, excellent road network, problem is communist rebels has the strongest presence here in any area of Mindanao and along with other bandits routinely continue to plague the livelihood of the locals there.North Cotabato – SC’s northern counterpart, known for being the rice basket of Mindanao thanks to its massive rice farms. Fast infrastructure development especially on the eastern side. Sadly its southwestern side is quite impoverished thanks to the everyday annoyance of Islamic terrorist groups.Misamis Oriental – lots of heavy industry but is already reaching supersaturation (i.e. what Metro Manila is experiencing now) having been one of Mindanao’s earliest industrial regions.

Although it possesses shorter shoreline than other Davao regional provinces, Davao del Norte boasts its competitive ports with more efficient system than Sasa's in Davao City. Tourism is also a major part of the economy of Davao del Norte. There are a lot of beaches on Samal Island, the most famous of which is Pearl Farm Beach Resort. Around 100 inland and beach resorts dot the paradise island. Pearl Farm Resort Commerce is also a major part of the economy of Davao del Norte. There are lot of shopping malls in Tagum City. Tagum, from being a predominantly agricultural area, has become Mindanao's fastest-rising urban city due to its strategic location, being in the crossroads between the rural areas of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley and the urban Metro Davao. Tagum City Metro Davao The Metropolitan Davao area, which is the biggest urban center in Mindanao, includes two coastal cities, one municipality and an island city in Davao del Norte. These areas are now hosting several development projects. The P2.95B flyover in Tagum City, 88-ha mixed-use Agriya City in Panabo City, P16.47B Davao City-Samal Island bridge, first phase of Mindanao Railway project, the lion share of P2-B budget allotted for tourism and transport roads in Davao Region are just some of the biggest infrastructure and industrial park projects in Davao del Norte. Agriya City The municipal government heads of the first class municipalities of Carmen, Sto. Tomas, Asuncion and Kapalong strive to hit the city status mark. Carmen is currently the balut capital of Davao Region while Kapalong and Sto. Tomas possess extensive forests and farmlands. Resort-oriented New Corella and cocoa-rich Talaingod, once infested by NPA, are now attracting more investments and expanding farms. Although the municipalities of B.E. Dujali and San Isidro are perceived as newly established municipalities, their government officials promote OTOP program specializing organic rice and cacao tableya respectively. These economic activities are all supported by more farm to market roads. The roll-out of the results of the National Color-Coded Agricultural and Fisheries Survey and Map shall allow for better planning and programming of investments for the agriculture, forestry and fishery sectors, leading to greater productivity. Davao Region’s banana industry, the Region’s top earner, shall benefit from the lifting of phyto-sanitary restrictions on Philippine banana by China. Better prospects also await the cacao industry given the active private sector players, The industry’s tie up with the academe on research and development is also expected to boost the quality of cacao products. Agribusiness will surely benefit from the the establishment of UP Los Baños campus in the province. The provincial government enhances access and mobility through transport. Provision of access to potable water and irrigation facilities, other infrastructure support and logistics as well as the simplified credit facility for farmers and fisher folks are in progress. ____________________________________________ All of these plans and ongoing projects are believed to spur greater economic prosperity.
