I think Thailand is a good place to start. A USA passport gets you 30 day visa. Or you can apply for an On Arrival 90 day visa at the airport. Lodging, food and transportation is inexpensive. Locals are nice and there’s lots to do. I just moved to Phuket from South Korea, where I had been living for 4 years. I am taking a self study course and enjoying the fine weather. Headed to the Philippines after this month. Above all do your homework when deciding where to go. Check travel blogs and news sources. Review prices for airfares to and from, and lodgings. Remember to look up medical facilities and Pharma needs costs, too. If you have kids, check out local schooling options. And let’s not forget, be sure you have int’l banking options. If you need a local job, check int’l job boards and get your paperwork ready to go. Usually documents need apostilles and your passport should have plenty of pages and time left on it. And get a few sets of visa photos taken in different size categories (countries have specific size specs). In the end, the place you feel most comfortable is where you should go.

Singapore for short-term. (there is too much restrictions unless you belong to the majority stereotypical Singaporean mindset who love to follow orders, prioritise status and money) Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur for long-term.
