Original Question: “Which is the best bank in the Philippines for expats?” Bank policies change often especially in developing countries, also, policies will definitely be different from one bank to another, and can sometimes be different from one branch to another within the same bank. My answer is based on my experience quite a few years ago and reality may be different today. I have valid Citibank accounts in two different countries for many years, but unless you are at least a permanent resident of the Philippines already, they would not open an account for you. Metrobank has similar requirements. I was successfully opened an ATM account at BPO and BPI. However, in my experience and my opinion, BDO employees are mostly lack of training, I feel they are incompetent and unwilling to assist the customers. With BPI, its much better if you can have a Filipino friend with you. Many employees either unable to, or unwilling to assist you unless you speak Tagalog. Again, it probably depends on the branch you visit. I recently had to close my BDO account out of frustration, and I only have account with BPI. If I have to recommend ‘the best bank in the Philippines for expats’, I vote for BPI.
